Search Google like a Pro

0 comments

Exact Words and Phrases
One of the most basic and widely known search tricks is using quotation marks to search for an exact phrase. For example, perform the following search and you’ll only get pages that contain the word “Hello” followed by the word “World.”
Hello World

Excluding a Word
The minus sign allows you to specify words that shouldn't appear in your results. For example, if you’re looking for pages about Linux distributions that don’t mention Ubuntu, use the following search:
linux distributions -ubuntu

Site Search
The site: operator allows you to perform a search in a specific site. Let’s say you’re looking for information on Tips on Phonegadgetz.blogspot.com . You could use the following search
site:Phonegadgetz.blogspot.com Tips
You can also use the site: operator to specify a domain. For example, if you’re looking for high-quality references, you could use site:.edu to only pull up results from .edu domains.

Related Words
The tilde (~) operator is the opposite of enclosing a single word in quotes — it searches for related words, not just the word you type. For example, if you ran the following search, you’d find search results with words similar to “geek”:
~geek

The asterisk (*) is a wildcard that can match any word. For example, if you wanted to see what companies Google has purchased and how much they paid, you could use this search:
google purchased * for * dollars

Time Ranges
A little-known search operator allows you to specify a specific time range. For example, use the following search to find results about Ubuntu from between 2008 and 2010:
ubuntu 2008..2010

File Type
The filetype: operator lets you search for files of a specific file type. For example, you could search for only PDF files.
filetype:pdf Computer history

One Word or the Other
The “OR” operator lets you find words that contain one term or another. For example, using the following search will pull up results that contain either the word “Ubuntu” or the word “Linux.” The word “OR” must be in uppercase.
ubuntu OR linux

Word Definitions
You don’t have to Google a word and look for a dictionary link if you want to see its definition. Use the following search trick and you’ll see an inline definition:
define:word

Calculator
Use Google instead of pulling one out or launching a calculator app. Use the +, -, * and / symbols to specify arithmetic operations. You can also use brackets for more complicated expressions. Here’s an example:
(4 + 2) * (6 / 3)

Unit Conversions
The calculator can also convert between units. Just type “X [units] in [units]”. Here’s an example:
5 nautical miles in kilometers

What is the Difference Between Sleep and Hibernate in Windows

Sleep Mode
Sleep mode is a power-saving state that is similar to pausing a DVD movie. All actions on the computer are stopped and any open documents and applications are put in memory. You can quickly resume normal, full-power operation within a few seconds. Sleep mode is basically the same thing as “Standby” mode.The Sleep mode is useful if you want to stop working for a short period of time. The computer doesn't use much power in Sleep mode.

Hibernate
The Hibernate mode saves your open documents and running applications to your hard disk and shuts down the computer, which means once your computer is in Hibernate mode, it uses zero power. Once the computer is powered back on, it will resume everything where you left off. Use this mode if you won’t be using the laptop for an extended period of time, and you don’t want to close your documents.

Hybrid Sleep
The Hybrid Sleep mode is a combination of the Sleep and Hibernate modes meant for desktop computers. It puts any open documents and applications both in memory and on your hard disk, and then puts your computer into a low-power state, allowing you to quickly wake the computer and resume your work. The Hybrid Sleep mode is enabled by default in Windows on desktop computers and disabled on laptops. When enabled, it automatically puts your computer into Hybrid Sleep mode when you put it into Sleep mode. Hybrid Sleep mode is useful for desktop computers in case of a power outage. When power resumes, Windows can restore your work from the hard disk, if the memory is not accessible.

The Sleep and Hibernate options are accessed using the arrow button next to the Shut down button on the Start menu.

If you don’t see the Sleep option or the Hibernate option, it may be for one of the following reasons:
  • Your video card may not support the Sleep mode. Refer to the documentation for your video card. You can also update the driver.
  • If you don’t have administrative access on the computer, you may have to refer to the administrator to change the option.
  • The power-saving modes in Windows are turned on and off in your computer’s BIOS (basic input/output system). To turn on these modes, restart your computer and then enter the BIOS setup program. The key for accessing BIOS differs for each computer manufacturer. Instructions for accessing BIOS generally displays on the screen as the computer boots. For more information, see your computer’s documentation or check the website for your computer’s manufacturer.
  • If you don’t see the Hibernate option, the Hybrid Sleep option is mostly likely enabled.

We know lot of things about computers & softwares we use but often small & simple things are unknown to us which prevents us to make use of it fully.
A simple notepad can do lot more work than just for typing text and saving the information. Read more about Notepad now,

1. Check Your Anti-Virus is good or bad
-> Open the Notepad and paste this:
X5O!P%@AP[4PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

-> Save the notepad as “virus-test.txt”
-> Scan the file using your anti-virus , if it detects then it is good anti-virus.
Note : This is not a virus code. This kind of test is called Eicar-Anti-Virus Test
Kaspersky 2010 detected immediately without asking to scan after saving the file in my system. So, I got good Anti-virus.

2. A Simple log to save the date & time
-> Open the Notepad
-> Type “.LOG” ( case-sensitive)
-> save it as *.txt
-> Each time you click the file , it will open the notepad and displays the current system date & time.

3. Create a system pop-up message
-> Open the Notepad
-> Paste this code :
    @echo off
    msg * POP-UP Message

-> If you don’t want to prompt, then type /Q instead of /P

5. Make Your Windows talk whatever you want
-> Open the Notepad
-> Paste this code :
Dim msg, sapi
msg=InputBox(”Type Your Text”,”Talk it”)
Set sapi=CreateObject(”sapi.spvoice”)
sapi.Speak msg

-> save the file as *.vbs.
-> Now run the file and type what you want , your system will speak.

6. Increase your Internet speed
All Windows OS reserve 20% bandwidth for checking their updates regularly. If you make it zero , you can increase your Internet speed.
-> Type “gpedit.msc” in run command.
-> Then click “Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Network --> QOS Packet Scheduler”
-> Double Click “Limit Reservable Bandwidth”
-> Enable it and enter Bandwidth Limit as “0″.

Got bored or tired of reading PDF documents? lets listen it.
-> To hear the whole document – ctrl+ shift + b
-> To hear only the page – ctrl + shift + v
-> To resume – ctrl + shift + c

I tried this in both Acrobat Reader version 6.0 and 7.0.

8. CCleaner on your own
Clean all your temporary Internet files, cookies, temp files, log files, backup files, recent documents and more…
-> Open the notepad
